A ‘Local’ Way to Suppress Script Triggers
Feb 10, 2012
Script triggers are a great feature in FileMaker that allow you to initiate a script when certain actions occur such as committing a record or leaving a layout. Not only do they run when user initiated, they can also be script initiated by script steps. This can sometimes produce unexpected results and so you may wish for triggers to be disabled. This article presents a very simple and elegant method of suppressing script triggers from firing when initiated by other scripts…Creating a Fundamental FileMaker Go Layout - Layout Sizing

Creating a Fundamental FileMaker Go Layout - Layout Sizing
This is the second blog post in a series about Creating a Fundamental Layout for use in FileMaker Go. The goal of this series is to offer practical advice and specific instructions for creating FileMaker Go layouts that look and act the way you, and your users, expect.
Today we'll be covering Layout Sizing.
Sizing a FileMaker Go layout is based on the idea of being able to Scroll Lock your layout. I cover the explanation and importance of this concept in my previous post of this series, Understanding Scroll Lock. In short, scroll lock is when the objects in a layout are contained within vertical and/or horizontal size constraints, causing the layout to conform to the expected behavior of layouts on mobile devices. The expected behavior is:
- If all objects are shown on a layout, lock the layout so it can't be moved.
- If not all of the objects on a layout are shown, allow the user to scroll horizontally and/or vertically in order to see the additional objects.

FileMaker Training or Coaching?
Training or coaching - which is right for you?
The simple answer:
- Training is an overarching effort to teach you how to effectively use the FileMaker toolkit.
- Coaching is a more tactical approach that focuses on learning how to apply the FileMaker toolkit to your specific application.
Here's an analogy that might make the distinction easier to grapple with:

Tactical Steps to Improve Your Sales Funnel

Last week, I wrote about the theory behind these sales tactics. You should review that first if you're interested.
The key is being able to identify an ideal prospect and 'know' who you are communicating with. There's a simple way to determine a qualified lead from an unqualified lead: ask the people involved.
Now let's figure out how to ask.

SuperContainer 2.831 released
Nov 14, 2011
SuperContainer 2.831 has been released. Due to problems with Java Update 6 for Snow Leopard and Java Update 1 for Lion (1.6.0.29), Java applets may crash in FileMaker. This crash occurs once a layout that contains an applet is opened. The latest version of SuperContainer works around these issues by switching to an HTML-only mode when running on Mac OS X, without a Java applet. This disables some functionality, including drag and drop. Bug reports have been filed with Apple, listed below:
- Apple bug report #9843334: 32 bit Java crashes when loading applet if JVM has already been loaded
- Apple bug report #9843400: Drag & drop broken with Java applets in Lion
360Works is currently waiting on a fix from Apple to restore this functionality.

Nov 05, 2011
A lot of folks have been asking for the Virtual List example file we put together with Bruce Robertson, so here it is: VirtualList.zip
This Virtual List technique is part of what make our Calendar fast, and allows FMSearchResults to show records from different tables in the same ‘portal’. We demonstrated some applications of this at DevCon’s Year in Review in 2010 and 2011, showing how this can really speed up FileMaker displays, especially those formatted as columns, grids, or lists.
Todd Geist has also been speaking about this a lot, including last week in Toronto, where he demonstrated how we’re using it in Worx.
There was a also a great session on Virtual Lists at Pause[x]London. Sample files and recorded presentations here.
Are you using Virtual Lists?
Calendar as Dashboard
Nov 04, 2011
We have a small subset of customers who wire their calendars up to act as dashboards on big displays. I’ve always thought this was cool and someday hope to get around to making one for SeedCode, a la the great dashboard at Panic.
One of these customers asked for something pretty cool today: they wanted to be able to cycle through the different resources on the calendar (recording studios in her system), showing each one on the week view for a few seconds, before moving to the next studio automatically.
Easy with a couple simple scripts and an OnTimer trigger. Feel free to add these to your own version of the calendar: AutomatedDisplayScripts.pdf

Last week we featured a series of five (5) videos from our Certified FileMaker Developer, Chad Adams, on our Facebook and Twitter social media profiles. He created these videos to both compliment a series of Text Function videos he did earlier this year, and to offer as a supplemental resource for other developers and/or novice FileMaker users.
Chad chose to cover these particular Number Functions because they are ones that he uses most often, and they represent a set that is fairly easy to explain and understand.
What’s next? Chad will present a series of Date Functions in the near future.

Support Diaries
Oct 26, 2011
Sometimes the hard stuff turns out to be really easy.
It always impresses me that Jason has a way of finding the simplest ways of doing things. For example, when iCal treats a holiday as an all day event, SeedCode can pick that up as a two-day event. A customer asked about how to work around this, changing the iCal parser in SeedCode Calendar Pro.
Jason sent them this screen shot showing how you can more easily teach SeedCode to ignore the end date of the holiday calendar, after the iCal event is parsed. Love it.

Our customer loved it too and posted this on our support forum:
As a new user of Calendar Pro I am very impressed with the simplicity and power of the solution template. I’ve been using & developing in FMP for over a decade; I can’t believe how simple the relationship-table is for Calendar Pro. It’s an example I hope to follow more often in my other Filemaker work.
That’s what it’s all about.

West Coast FMPug Tour Guest Speaker Jason Thomas on Sales
This week, the Skeleton Key office will sacrifice the physical presence of our beloved head of sales – Jason Thomas – as he travels to the West Coast to speak to enthusiastic FileMaker User Groups in Seattle, WA, Portland, OR and Santa Clara, CA.
Jason’s topic is Sales. His goal is to expand awareness of the need for a sales process while leveraging the expertise that already resides within both the in-house developer and consultant communities. He hopes to provide new knowledge, and improve attendees methods for identifying specific tactics and actions that will bring the sales process under control and make selling more predictable.

Oct 23, 2011
The September meeting was interesting from several prospectives. We had our core group of people, of which I’m still the youngest, probably by age, as well as time spent in the community. I brought to the meeting a box of Dunkin’ Donuts munchkins, for no particular reason. I also learned that Ginger Bread is out [...]FileMaker Feud 2011, Round 3
Oct 21, 2011
It is time for the final round of FileMaker Feud. Oct 21, 2011
Once you start down the path exploring new features or technologies, often the deeper you dig the more cool stuff you expose. In my first post on SQL and FileMaker I focused simply on pulling and comparing data between tables. There are several advantages to employing SQL in FileMaker: speed and context perhaps the primary [...]Summary Report in a Filtered Portal

Oct 17, 2011
This weekend, Todd Geist and I took the train up from LA for a 33 hour code sprint and built the start of Worx, the next file for GoZync.
This is a great way to work and we got a ton done.

Todd on the Coast Starlight
Worx is a work orders system for iPad: users in the office assign orders to technicians and those techs “zync” the orders down to their iPads before completing the orders. Orders come down with contact info, maps, and a serious items database capable of browsing and selecting from tens of thousands of items.
Here are some screen shots from the iPad side…
…and a short video of the office side showing the virtual list Todd created for our side bar. Nice stuff.
Worx will be available as a ready-to-go solution for GoZync that you can tie to your own hosted file or use on its own. More soon.
Taming the Virtual List, Part II
Oct 16, 2011
Part I provided a broad outline of the Virtual List Technique. Part II will step through a specific example of how this technique solved a MightyData customer’s request. Requirements This customer needed a sales order and invoice tracking system, and provided a sample of the current sales order in Excel. I mimicked this layout in [...]Skeleton Key - The Positive Effect

Skeleton Key - The Positive Effect
Marketing – be it 'traditional', word-of-mouth, grassroots or social media based, is not new for me.
Marketing for Skeleton Key, a service-driven, Custom Application Development/Information Technology Consulting company is relatively new for me.
My adventure began in mid-January...
In order to promote and solidify the Skeleton Key (SK) brand to the widest-reaching audience and business consumers of FileMaker software, I had to learn to understand what made SK 'tick'.

Have you ever wanted to create a report in FileMaker, but found it just doesn’t work that way? Perhaps you need to combine disparate data from several tables. Oct 04, 2011
Kiosk mode is a cool way to run a FileMaker database in a full screen environment where users are prevented from accessing the other functionality of the operating system. But what if you have a normal FileMaker solution and wish to use kiosk functionality in certain areas only?In this article we illustrate how a typical FileMaker solution can be enhanced with a kiosk component for carrying out certain actions. We use the article example file to help illustrate this. We also give some information on what kiosk mode is, and things to watch out for when developing for it.
FileMaker Server: Disabling Java Updates
Oct 04, 2011
A common question on the TechTalk mailing list or on FMForums is Why has the FileMaker Server Admin Console stopped working? He has successfully taken a fantastic idea and from that has significantly built a stable and open community in the past year alone. I consider Andy to be a leader in building and strengthening the FileMaker community".
